One aspect of {pineplace} that might surprise folks is that we also do commercial products. If you have a small business (or a large business!) we can help you get the word out. This is a recently finished job that we think turned out pretty great!

My husband does freelance graphic design work and designed the corporate identity for this client as well. If you have your own artwork we can just do the vinyl, if you need both we can do that too! 
We can also create banners for your business, school, non-profit or anything else you want to share with the world. At last check our banners are 1/3 the cost of the same banner at Kinko's.

Fistful of Daisies

I love daisies. 
Gerbera is my favorite.

 I even planted some this year and they lived...well, for a little while (have I mentioned my black thumb?)

Nothing beats taking a walk and gathering a fistful of shasta daisies which grow wild by my home.

 I drew these abstract daisies a while back in my vinyl cutting program using just circles and ovals. I really like how they turned out,  in all their simplicity.

I chose to use them in my master bath to bring a little of the outdoors, in, even in the winter months.

Garage Sale Frame

Wanted to share a garage sale find that turned out really great.

This was it:

 It was $3 and it was heinous. My apologies to the nice folks I bought this from if they ever happen to read this blog (what are the chances of that, right?) but this has to be one of the ugliest things I have ever seen! In order to have a good garage selling/junkin' eye you have to see beyond what you are looking at and envision what it could be come:

Like a beautiful addition to my daughter's bedroom wall collage that I surprised her with for her 16th birthday.

That's right, I just busted out that nasty painting, spray painted the frame black and framed a vinyl chandelier I cut out of black vinyl and had already adhered to her wall. Perfect.

First Tutorial: Beach Art

OKAY...time for my first tutorial...wish me luck! This is really basic, thought we'd start easy. I am going to show you how I made a beach sign for my kids' bathroom using vinyl lettering as a stencil. 
First, I prepared my wood. You can choose from almost any medium for this project wood, fabric, metal. I used some more of that old wood crate you have heard me mention before. I sanded it down, nothing too intense and then whitewashed it with basic white house paint (handy to have a bucket of this around, I use it all the time for projects).

Next, I applied the vinyl. When I created the vinyl I made it to be used as a stencil, which means I took the letters out and left the negative image. Vinyl lettering comes with a paper backing that needs to be peeled off. There is masking (looks like a huge piece of masking tape) on the front that will keep everything together as you pull off the paper backing:

Then, I flipped the vinyl piece over and stuck it to the board. I rubbed it down onto the board with my fingers so it would stick and started pulling the masking off. You can see my whitewashed board through the letters.

Next, comes the spray paint (love spray paint!). I used this guy:

And it looked like this when I was done. I did not want deep coverage, I wanted the wood grain to show through. Yes, my husband LOVES what I have done to the garage floor!

Once dry, I removed the vinyl all in one piece still. And voila! 

I let my daughter pick the saying, since she loves the warm beach (as opposed to any beaches we live near which are very cold), I am doing the bathroom in a beach theme to help her feel more at 'home'. This sign is 12 inches tall and 35 inches wide. The vinyl to do a project this size on your own would be $22. It can be customized to say anything you want, or it can also be a graphic. 'Container Decorating'

You have probably heard of 'container gardening.' My favorite decorating look 'du jour' is something I have dubbed 'container decorating.'  It is basically gathering decorating elements into a 'container' on your decorating space, whether it be a table, counter, shelf or mantle. It gives it a finished look and helps when decorating elements seem to be 'floating' around on the space. The 'container' can be of any type.

It's Summertime...Time to Pack Your Suitcase

Headed east of the mountains this weekend to visit family and fell upon a neighborhood garage sale quite by accident near Cle Elum. It was more than a neighborhood garage sale though...it was the Roads of Wonder Community Yard Sale which is apparently an annual event with breakfast and BBQ lunch provided. It is at the Sun Country Estates Golf Course off of I-90. For those from these parts it would be worth marking the calendar to try to hit it next year. Part of the proceeds go to help fund a good cause each year, this year funds went towards the Carpenter Library. I'll give you a sneak peak at what I found...

It became my instant favorite when the sweet lady selling them to me told me her mother use to strap it to the back of the Ford Model T on summer road trips. I can just picture it, can't you...

The Other Half

Thought I would share the other half of my son's room that I shared with you in my last post. It is probably the creation of mine that I am most proud of, bar none (to this point).
Nearly fifteen years ago my dad bought a huge CNC routing machine that actually had to be shipped by barge from Germany. It came in a huge crate that is now nicely weathered and worn. Dad kept the crate and I have recently discovered it, mostly forgotten, cut down to smaller pieces and just waiting to become all of the amazing things I am imagining I can do with it! The first was this:

Jackson's Headboard

Could not have done this without the husband's help. Have I mentioned he is a graphic designer? Comes in VERY handy, believe you me! He helped me get this image formatted so we could cut it out in vinyl and then we used the negative image of it. Once I got the headboard cleaned up and sanded down some of the rougher spots we stuck the vinyl to the wood and spray-painted over it, careful to do it lightly to keep the rustic look. Once dry, we peeled off the vinyl and...

I love it!
